Let’s start with the winter months, or for people around the world, with “cooler” months. Did you know that these months are the perfect time to fertilize? The fertilizer will be able to sit longer and give the grass the proper nutrients. When spring comes around, your grass will be lush and green. Also, during the winter months, make sure to avoid a lot of traffic on the grass. Since the grass is dry and brown, it is a lot more prone to breakage. Walking on the lawn will not help it! Keep your grass protected by walking on sidewalks instead of taking a shortcut through the grass.
During the Spring months, be sure to add your lawn to your list of things to do. Testing your soil should be one of the top priorities when it comes to making sure your lawn is getting the nutrients it needs. Aerating is also very important, but it only needs to be done every couple of years. Aerating brings air, water, and nutrients to the roots of the grass, therefore helping to create a healthier, stronger lawn. Dethatching is another important thing to consider. You only need to worry about dethatching if the thatch on your lawn it is over ½ of an inch. Otherwise, thatch can be very useful for your lawn’s growth.
Now it’s the the prime of your lawn’s growing season, Summer!! Summer is the time when your hard work finally pays off! In order to maintain healthy grass during this time, let your grass grow higher and cut it more frequently. A good rule of thumb is to cut off ⅓ of the grass blade. Cutting your grass too low can damage it, and it can allow weeds to make their way into your lawn. Make sure to keep your lawn mower blade sharp all year long so that your grass can receive the best grooming possible.
When the weather starts to cool down and you have to wear a jacket, you know it’s time to clear off the lawn and rake it in order to prepare it for winter. Fall is also the perfect time to reseed for next summer. However, you only need to reseed the spots that are looking bare. During fall, add any needed calcium using lime for your grass. By doing this, your grass can have what nutrients iit needs for next summer!
No matter what time of year it is, make sure that you are always getting rid of pesky weeds and insects that make their way into your lawn. This will keep your lawn looking great! Another tip is to water your lawn in the morning. This is the best time because the grass is able to dry throughout the day, which causes less bacteria and mold to grow and harm your grass.
Caring for your lawn can be a piece of cake. All it takes is a little knowledge and determination to make it look great! Now that you have both of those things, get to work!
